Head of Legal & Governance - Podium Analytics

Podium Analytics is seeking a qualified solicitor to fill the role of Head of Legal & Governance. This position is pivotal in providing high-quality legal advice, guidance, and representation, negotiating contracts, managing risk, and ensuring compliance with regulations. The ideal candidate will have significant in-house experience within a commercial or not-for-profit organization, preferably in the sports sector. This hands-on role demands a proactive and flexible attitude, with a strong ability to adapt to various legal and governance challenges.

Key Responsibilities:

Legal:

• Serve as the main legal advisor to Podium's Senior Management Team and staff.
• Handle a range of legal issues, including contract and commercial law, intellectual property, data protection, employment, and regulatory matters.
• Draft, review, and negotiate various legal documents such as commercial agreements, supplier contracts, licensing agreements, and non-disclosure agreements.
• Manage intellectual property and employment law matters, including drafting employment contracts and ensuring HR compliance.
• Liaise with and instruct external legal advisors.
• Act as the primary contact for all legal and compliance queries.

Data Protection:

• Lead advice on data protection processes and procedures, acting as the Data Protection Officer.
• Oversee Podium’s injury data collection programme and other projects with data protection implications.
• Prepare and maintain data protection compliance documentation, manage subject access requests, and handle data breach responses.
• Provide data protection training and share best practices with staff.

Compliance and Risk:

• Ensure effective compliance oversight, supporting the Finance & Business Operations Director in developing and implementing a robust compliance framework.
• Monitor internal controls and procedures, maintaining effective risk reporting.
• Serve as Company Secretary, ensuring compliance with Companies House requirements.
• Advise on regulatory issues and liaise with regulatory bodies.
• Support Company Secretarial matters and facility management compliance issues.

Key Contacts:

• Internally with the Finance & Business Operations Director, Senior Management Team, and Podium Analytics staff.
• Externally with legal advisors, suppliers, the Podium Analytics Institute for Sports Medicine and Technology at the University of Oxford, sports national governing bodies, schools partners, commercial partners, and government entities.

Person Specification:

Essential Qualifications and Experience:

• Qualified solicitor (England and Wales) with 6+ years PQE.
• Experience in contract law, employment, intellectual property, and sports law.
• Knowledge of Charity Law/Governance, corporate governance, risk management, and compliance.
• Expert knowledge of GDPR and data protection legislation.

Desirable Experience:

• Experience with International Federations, National Governing Bodies, or other regulatory/non-profit organizations.
• Knowledge of product standards regulations and experience with technology organizations.
• Experience in fast-paced and scale-up environments.
• Passion for sports.
