Online

Cognitive Behavioural Approaches for Problem Gambling Treatment is an intermediate-level, 8-week facilitated course designed for clinicians seeking to enhance their skills and knowledge in treating problem gambling through cognitive behavioural techniques. The course will be conducted virtually from October 7th to November 29th, 2024, combining online learning with live simulation activities.

Course Structure: The course is divided into two main parts:

Online-Facilitated Learning:

  • During the initial weeks, participants will engage in online learning modules focusing on cognitive and behavioural strategies essential for supporting individuals struggling with problem gambling. These modules will cover various techniques and methods to address and modify harmful gambling behaviours and thought patterns.

Live Virtual Simulations:

  • In Weeks 4 and 8, participants will partake in live virtual simulation activities using WebEx. These sessions involve role-playing with simulated patients—trained actors portraying clients based on real-life case studies. This practical component is crucial for applying theoretical knowledge in a controlled, interactive environment. The use of a web camera and speakers is mandatory for participation.

Learning Objectives: By the end of the course, participants will be able to:

  • Identify and address schemas affecting recovery.
  • Challenge and reshape cognitive distortions related to gambling through cognitive restructuring techniques.
  • Plan with clients to track gambling patterns and related behaviours.
  • Identify and develop strategies to address gambling triggers.
  • Assist clients in creating plans to interrupt gambling patterns.

Certification and Accreditation: The course is accredited by the Canadian Addiction Counsellors Certification Federation, providing 13.0 Continuing Education Units (CEUs). An application for additional accreditation has been submitted to the University of Toronto, Continuing Professional Development, Temerty Faculty of Medicine. This course is part of the Gambling, Gaming and Technology Use Knowledge Exchange under CAMH Education at the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH).

Registration Details: To register, participants should complete the online registration form. Successful registration will be confirmed upon seeing a message stating, "You have successfully registered for this training event." Given the limited enrollment to ensure a high-quality learning experience, it is advisable to register early. If the course reaches capacity, a waiting list will be available. To join the waiting list, continue the registration process until receiving confirmation of placement on the list.

Important Note: Participants should add [email protected] to their email contacts to ensure receipt of all communications, including letters of completion. Registrants may be contacted to confirm their eligibility as this is an intermediate-level course intended for clinicians.

Conclusion: This comprehensive training offers a blend of theoretical knowledge and practical application, essential for clinicians aiming to improve their competence in treating problem gambling. The combination of online learning and live simulations provides a robust learning experience, contributing to professional growth and improved client outcomes.
